7.1 earthquake in the Peru, Bolivia and Brazil border region

A powerful earthquake just hit Peru near the borders with Brazil and Bolivia. No word on damage or injuries. 7.1 magnitude, according to the USGS.

The earthquake was strongest in Ucayali. Ucayal is an inland region in Peru. Located in the Amazon rainforest, its name is derived from the Ucayali River. The regional capital is the city of Pucallpa.

The location is in the jungle border region and a region with only smaller villages.

  • 223.8 km (138.7 mi) W of Cobija, Bolivia
  • 226.1 km (140.2 mi) W of Brasilia, Brazil
  • 240.5 km (149.1 mi) NW of Tambopata, Peru
  • 246.8 km (153.0 mi) NW of Puerto Maldonado, Peru

At this time there are no reports of injuries or death.

The 7.1 magnitude earthquake rocked Peru early this morning at the Brazil border. The massive quake hit at 4am local time.

The region is popular with jungle tourism.
