Etihad Airways welcomes ICAO carbon agreement

Etihad Airways statement on ICAO agreement on a global scheme to control aviation emissions

Etihad Airways welcomes the ICAO agreement on a global scheme to control aviation emissions, having proactively supported the initiative from the start.

Since 2008, the airline has been working closely with local stakeholders, including airlines, airports and civil aviation authorities, particularly the GCAA, which represents the UAE at the ICAO Assembly.

Under this agreement, aviation will be the only sector with a global, market-based measure (GMBM) applied to it. The application of the GMBM is a major step towards achieving the industry’s 2020 Carbon Neutral Growth Goal.

While there can be no doubt about the economic advantages of aviation around the world – supporting over 60 million jobs and providing USD2.7 trillion in economic benefits – we also realize that every industry has an environmental footprint, and a responsibility to address it. As a responsible company, Etihad Airways acknowledges that efforts to reduce carbon dependency need to take place locally and internationally, which is why we have numerous initiatives that demonstrate a sustainable approach to business. We are a leader in the region in supporting the development of alternative sustainable aviation fuels – both as a founding member of the Masdar-led Sustainable Bioenergy Research Consortium and in launching the BIOjet Abu Dhabi: Flight Path to Sustainability initiative.

The airline’s modern fleet of aircraft represents the latest in fuel efficiency, while constant tracking takes place to identify areas where fuel consumption can be reduced.
