India-Maldives route gets a big boost

New flight service welcomed by India and Maldives, lauding the old close ties between the two countries.

A significant boost to travel and tourism is expected on the popular India-Maldives route from November 14 when Mega Maldives airline starts its direct, nonstop services in the Male-Delhi sector.

The service will be three times a week, using a Boeing 737-800, configured with 12 business class and 156 economy class seats. George Weinmann, founder and CEO of Mega Maldives Airlines, said in New Delhi on November 4, announcing the launch that soon Mumbai will also be added to the network.

He said that convenient flight timings and the fact that the service was direct would be a big attraction, and would also save time, with convenient sea-plane transfers available. Ambassador Ahmed Mohamed of Maldives welcomed the new service, lauding the old close ties between the two countries.

The envoy said that Indian arrivals to Maldives had shot up to 6th position in 2015, up from 7th in 2014 and eight in 2013. From January-August, 2016, a 21.4 percent growth has occurred over 2015 during the same period.
