India travel industry pushing tiger tourism

Industry veteran, Inder Sharma, has asked travel industry players to take greater interest in the tigers and wildlife sanctuaries in the country.

He was speaking at the award-giving function organized by WWF – World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), also known as the World Wildlife Fund in the US and Canada – India and PATA India to honor winners of the Bagh Mitra Awards – friends of wildlife.

Sharma said that the wealth of India was not only the Taj Mahal and the Ganga river, but also the tigers, whose numbers are now increasing after much efforts. Sharma, who has held virtually all offices in the travel industry in India and abroad, complemented WWF for doing a good job in handling the awards over the years.

Ravi Singh, WWF India secretary general, said that much progress has been made in the tiger preserves, in spite of constraints and limitations.

The award went to Pench Bor Tiger Conservation Foundation, led by M S Reddy, and Ashish Tiwari of Katerniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary, who gave presentations on their work.
