La Societe des Telepheriques de la Grande Motte: New vision for Tignes Municipality

Green Globe member La Societe des Telepheriques de la Grande Motte (STGM) is a subsidiary of the Compagnie des Alpes Ski Group. Since 1989, STGM has been entrusted by the municipality of Tignes to oversee the development, operation, maintenance of ski lifts, golf and shuttle services at the resort. The Tignes ski area is linked to the Val d’Isere ski area, which offers, thanks to a common ticket, one of the most beautiful and large ski areas in the Savoie and the Alps.

Since the 2000s, STGM has been engaged in efforts to develop its activities, products and services in the joint search for customer satisfaction, staff protection, listening to partners and preserving the environment. Its approaches are fully integrated into the company’s decision-making process at the highest level by top management and the management committee. This commitment was recently validated with the awarding of Green Globe recertification, for the third year in a row.

Marie Planel, CSR Manager at STGM said, “ I have been fortunate enough to work in this department since 2010, first as an assistant and now as the CSR Manager. Working in this unique local environment, it seemed important to me to evolve our commitment to sustainable development and CSR. To this end, in 2015 our CEO expressed his wish for STGM to comply with Green Globe Certification standards. This commitment entailed a new direction for the organization going forward, including changes to our purchasing, consumption and operational policies to the benefit of the local environment. It is a real commitment, which I hope will bring about a cultural change throughout our organization.”

SUSTAINABILITY POLICY

The foundation of STGM’s sustainability policy is the responsible use of goods in relation to the environment with specific attention paid to the quality of the products, the security of supplies and the satisfaction of company needs at the best cost. The company as a whole undertakes to act in the best interests of society, to accept no gifts, no invitations likely to alter its impartiality and to exclude itself from any situation which can create a conflict of interest.

This policy is implemented through four axes:

• To focus on systematically promoting sustainable purchases through the use of eco-friendly products and the use of component repair rather than replacement when possible (reduction, reuse, repair, recycling).

• Strive to optimize internal resources and skills by defining and choosing the nature of outsourced services. The quality of first-hand knowledge held by managers and staff alike makes it possible to know the value of what one buys and is often the first source of economic decision making.

• Guarantee “win/win” relationships with suppliers through commercial agreements and reciprocal evaluations that enhance the quality of business dealings.

• Master company expenses while contributing to the local economy.

PURCHASING STRATEGY

The redesign of STGM’s purchasing procedures is underway which will create a better order management system that will minimize deliveries and packaging. Collaboration with companies located within a close perimeter of Tignes is also favored. This organizational upheaval will allow a centralization of orders, a sharp monitoring of stocks that will target obsolete products and improve delivery and budget outcomes.

WASTE MANAGEMENT APPROACH

To encourage responsible actions amongst staff and guests, STGM joined the association Tree6clope and introduced new wall ashtrays at the property in early summer 2017. Tree6clope is an environmental group that works to collect large quantities of discarded cigarette butts and sends them to Mende in Lozere where they are recycled at a Terracycle factory. Terracycle specializes in recycling hard to recycle items. Tobacco, paper and ashes become non-food compost for golf greens, public gardens. While the filters are transformed into plastic bars to make tables, benches and outdoor urban furniture. Each ashtray carries an eco-friendly message.

Organized waste collection days take place under the chairlifts and participation in Environmental Days promoted by the Town Hall and Tignes Development are held at the resort. In addition, STGM provides the free distribution of 23,000 made in France pocket ashtrays to customers. STGM has also installed a golf cleaning station which recovers hydrocarbon substances.

SUSTAINABILITY TRAINING

Another key focus at STGM is employee training in sustainability.

“Sustainable development is a major challenge for our company. The STGM plays an important role in the economy of our region with 286 employees in winter and 129 in summer. It is therefore our duty to educate, train and inform our staff on all topics of sustainable development so that they become actors,” added Ms. Planel.

“It is important that everyone acts responsibly within their sphere of influence. The challenges to be met are numerous and we need to build a new vision, responsible in the long term, so that future generations can meet those needs.”
