Eleven airline passengers walked through an unmanned security checkpoint at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, and even though 3 of them set off the metal detector, they were able to continue on to their gates for departure.
TSA officials’ response to this incident is that they are confident there was no threat from the unscreened individuals who were able to board their flights without incident.
This all occurred in the morning at around 6:00 am yesterday at Terminal 5. Once TSA realized passenger had gone through the checkpoint before they had a chance to man the station, they reviewed the security video and then attempted to find the passengers in the terminal.
Only after 2 hours had passed without being able to locate the passengers, did a supervisor report the incident to the Port Authority Police Department – another major security breach, as protocol dictates that the department should have been notified immediately.
The 3 passengers who had set off the metal detectors had already boarded their flight to San Francisco, and they were screened once they landed in California. The other 8 passengers were never identified.
TSA released a statement saying they are reviewing the incident and “are confident this incident presents no threat to the aviation transportation system. Once our review is complete, TSA will discipline and retrain employees as appropriate.”
