Why do ASEAN tourists love Germany so much? Is it the German food, German music or perhaps the beer?

For eight consecutive years, German incoming tourism has produced record results. For 2017, the Federal Statistical Office recorded 83.9 million international overnight stays in hotels with at least ten beds. This is 3.1 million more than in 2016, an increase of 3.6 percent.

Says Petra Hedorfer, CEO of the German National Tourist Board (GNTB), “Throughout 2017, Germany’s incoming tourism has developed very dynamically. Positive economic fundamentals, political stability in important source markets and the outstanding positioning of Destination Germany as a brand in the international travel market form the basis of this excellent balance sheet. Especially as a holiday destination, we were able to score points with guests from all over the world.”

The new German National Tourist Office (ASEAN) based in Singapore and covering Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia as source markets, is to tap on the positive image of Germany and to add to the further growth of Germany’s incoming tourism in the years ahead.

Although Germany’s image is well-known by many people, the full range of what Germany can offer to South East Asian travelers requires more effort to inspire and increase “awareness level of Destination Germany”, says Chun Hoy Yuen, Director of GNTO (ASEAN).

Already 339,000 trips to Germany were made in 2016 by travelers from Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia. These are significant numbers. Already, in 2015, a total of 1.5 million overnight stays were recorded by the German Federal Statistical Office of persons who are coming from “other Asian countries”.
