96th edition of Arena of Verona Opera Festival presented in Rome

The mayor of Verona and President of Fondazione Arena Federico Sboarina, the Superintendent and Artistic Director of the Arena di Verona Foundation Cecilia Gasdia, together with the director Hugo de Ana and the conductor Daniel Oren, presented the 96th Arena of Verona Opera Festival 2018.

“The opera performances inside the Roman amphitheater have a unique charm, and for this edition we have chosen the road of quality. Great singers and important titles, thanks to the work of Superintendent Cecilia Gasdia. The Arena is from Verona but it is a heritage of the humanity.”

The presentation of the bill by Superintendent Gasdia of the lyrical season:

Friday, June 22 at 21.00 a highly anticipated new production of the famous Carmen by Bizet will inaugurate the 96th Opera Festival 2018 of the Verona Arena. The new production has the prestigious signature of Hugo de Ana, an Argentinean director, set designer and costume designer internationally renown and the original choreography by Vladimir Vasiliev which includes over 50 dancers on stage.

It follows Turandot by G.Puccini. Then Nabucco directed by Arnaud Bernard. Rossini’s Barbiere di Siviglia, a work often performed and much loved by Ms Gasdia, director Hugo de Ana, closes the table of the five 2018 representative titles.

The great date with the dance will feature Roberto Bolle.

Verona celebrates once again the most important of the Italian opera masters with the Verdi Opera Night with the participation of many opera stars that will interpret pieces chosen from La Forza del Destino, Rigoletto, Il Trovatore, La Traviata.

The cast, selected by Ms Gasdia, as stated by herself, includes about 30% of the performers’ debuts in order to offer the public more and more interesting and great talents, young promises or established artists.

Also the inaugural director of Carmen is a young teacher with already established international career, Francesco Ivan Ciampa, recently very appreciated by audiences and critics in Manon Lescaut at the Teatro Filarmonico.

Since March 3, 1875 Carmen’s troubled debut at the Opéra-Comique in Paris, the opera continues today uninterrupted throughout the world, and remains the most popular title after Aida with its 250 performances for 25 Festival editions in 13 different productions.

“The story of Carmen, therefore – says the Superintendent Gasdia -is the most famous femicide in history. The Arena and the opera are part of modern society and for this reason, carefully and with respect, we thought to remember and denounce this serious phenomenon during the first performance. 31 women were killed by their partners in 2018 and for this reason, on Friday 22nd, we will leave a seat empty in the stalls and we will place a bunch of 31 red roses on it “.

The inaugural evening will also be dedicated to the memory of Tullio Serafin – historical conductor who baptized the Arenean Festival in 1913 and, returning for many years to follow, in this magical setting discovered great talents like the divine Maria Callas.

The presentation press conference was hosted in Rome at the headquarters of the Foreign Press Association in Italy.
