airberlin starts wet-lease deal with Lufthansa Group

This is how sworn rivals become friends. Air  Berlin CEO Thomas Winkelmann called it today a  “Milestone in airberlin’s new positioning.”

The new buddies in Germany are airberlin, Etihad Airways and Lufthansa.

Three airberlin aircraft under the colors of Eurowings for the first time took off today from Hamburg to Manchester, Stuttgart, and Nuremberg.

Thomas Winkelmann, airberlin’s Chief Executive Officer added  “The wet-lease agreement with the Lufthansa Group is a significant milestone for airberlin by providing job security with ultimately 38 aircraft flying for the Lufthansa Group.”

The wet-lease agreement between airberlin and the Lufthansa Group was approved unconditionally at the end of January 2017 by the federal antitrust authorities.

The airberlin wet-leased A320 aircraft to the Lufthansa Group will be delivered in phases up to the end of April 2017 and all planes will carry wording on their fuselages, ‘operated by airberlin’.
