Alain St.Ange presents official election documents to Taleb Rifai in bid to become next UNWTO Secretary General

On the first day of Fitur in Madrid, the leading international tourism fair in Spain, Alain St.Ange — former Seychelles Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation, Ports and Marine—presented his official election documents to Taleb Rifai in his bid to become the next Secretary General (SG) of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).

“I am honoured to submit my Statement of Intent as Candidate from the Seychelles for the post of Secretary General of the UNWTO”, said St.Ange. “This is a huge step forward for Seychelles, and the coming May elections are also very important for the UNWTO. The new SG has to be the leader of the world of tourism, and Seychelles is proposing itself as that facilitator and leader. If I am successful in the May elections, I will introduce changes at the UNWTO that will address and overcome the challenges tourism faces today and in the future.”

In his official Statement of Intent, St.Ange has proposed a revised agenda for action with clear objectives covering the areas of Safety & Security, Sustainability & Climate, and the positioning of the UNWTO as the representative for the complete world of tourism. Additionally, St.Ange has put forward a detailed seven-point plan that will enable the UNWTO to operate as a successful global organization from 2017–2020.

The election for the next Secretary General of the UNWTO is set to take place in Madrid in May this year.
