American shopping chain hoping to reach MICE market in India

Simon Shopping Destinations is stepping into the growing meetings market in India.

The well-known American chain, Simon Shopping Destinations (SSD), is making an entry into the lucrative Indian market, trying to get visitors from India to shop at the over 100 outlets of SSD in the USA.

Initially, they are trying to market or promote 30 such destinations, Kristen Esposito, VP of Tourism and Marketing Alliances for Global Tourism Marketing, said in New Delhi on October 17, during her first trip to India, along with Lauren Rogers, Director of Global Tourism Marketing.

She told eTN that among the areas they are targeting is the growing MICE market, for which the SSD has several attractive tailor-made programs.

Other unique selling points included valet service for small groups and a savings passport with added-value discounts and special offers.

The Simon philosophy is to sell experience rather than just items or activity. There are three distinct outlets – malls, premium outlets, and the mills.

Sheema Vohra, who is looking after the SSD in India, said that what was helping the company was the fact that they were into developing mall complexes, which helped attract stakeholders.

The travel trade-operators will be closely involved in making itineraries and deciding what the guests want.

Kristen said that proximity to airports of some outlets would help shoppers use time before their departure.

The concept of personal shopping, when the guest can give advance info of his/her requirements, is expected to be an attraction for the shoppers.
