An earthquake of magnitude 5.8 rocked in Istanbul, Turkey today, sending school children and residents into the streets and collapsing the minaret of a mosque in Turkey’s commercial and cultural center.
The earthquake epicenter was located at a depth of 7 kilometers under the bottom of the Sea of Marmara.
The shocks were felt both in Istanbul and in its vicinity, which led to a “big panic” among the inhabitants of the city.
Local media reported that people “ran out into the street” and the schools were evacuated. In total, 14 tremors were felt in the city. The mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglu, stated that at present there is no reports on the dead or injured people.
The Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute recorded several aftershocks, with the highest at 4.4 magnitude.
