Building Information Modelling makes Istanbul new airport better

To increase passenger satisfaction and create a modern travel experience, İstanbul New Airport (finalist in Autodesk’s AEC Excellence Awards 2016) applies the latest technologies and digital transformation in constructing and running the airport. One of them is BIM – Building Information Modelling – which supports processes of construction such as design and engineering, project management, cost management, building management, and facility operations and asset management. For the first time, it is possible to create a true digital mirror of the physical world.

Being the world’s largest airport project, the project scope encompasses four phases. The first phase includes the construction of three runways, a terminal including five piers with an area of 1.3 million square meters, a parking lot with an area of 700,000 square meters, and other site facilities. The critical assets of the main terminal building, the runways, and the related emergency runway/taxiway system will be achieved within the project scope. At the end of the completion of all phases, a visionary project will come to life, providing 76 million square meters of airport with six runways, and supporting 3,500 takeoffs and landings per day, 200 million passengers a year, and access to 350 worldwide destinations. The project is one of the largest investments in modern Turkish history and the Turkish economy will generate billions of additional euros per year as well as provide many employment opportunities for thousands of people.

Yusuf Akçayoğlu, CEO of İGA Airport Construction, says: “BIM has an important role for strategic processes by supporting the integration of all related stakeholders and all relevant disciplines, including architecture, structure, MEP, the baggage-handling system, IT, etc. at such a major and complex infrastructure project. In like manner, engineering, QA/QC, and the use of technology are also very critical for us. Therefore, at the very beginning of the project, a collaborative environment with our subcontractors was created and very well delivered by mobile tablets on-site. Since all of our engineers are technologically fully equipped, they can reach the current project models on a cloud platform, which makes a significant contribution to improved engineering quality.”

One of the principal goals is to extend the life–cycle performance and sustainability of Istanbul New Airport while utilizing BIM in facility management and operations in the next phases. The BIM adoption process has already accelerated in Turkey as the İstanbul New Airport project has become a key learning hub not only for the Turkish construction industry but also as a global landmark for digital construction and the related project delivery.
