Central Italy woken up by another major earthquake

It may be the strongest earthquake measured in Italy. “Just got woken up by aftershocks of a 7.1 magnitude earthquake here in Rome, Italy. Our building was shaking for at least a minute.” These are the words of an eTN reader and a tourist vacationing in Italy’s capital on an otherwise beautiful Sunday morning.

An hour after posting the strength with 7.1, USGS corrected the number to 6.6.

This is a major earthquake. Measuring 7.1, a possible very serious destructive earthquake struck in central Italy on Sunday morning. 6.6 is still very strong,  but it would not constitute a record for the region.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties, but the potential of major damages is likely.

The quake was centered 68 km (42 miles) east southeast of Perugia. It was 108 km (67) deep.
