Chaos at Istanbul stadium after explosions and gunshots

Explosions and gunshots rang out today, December 10, near Beşiktaş’s Vodafone Arena in Istanbul two hours after a football match between Besiktas and Bursaspor, two of Turkey’s top teams.

Ambulances and police were sent to the scene where it has been reported that at least 20 police officers were injured. Initial reports indicated that there were two explosions followed by gunshots, and it is believed the riot police were the target for the attack.

The news was announced by Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu who said around 20 were injured in the explosions. Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım was briefed about the explosions by Soylu and Istanbul Governor Vasip Şahin. Soylu and Health Minister Recep Akdağ are heading to Istanbul.

According to a tweet, Bursaspor stated on its official Twitter account that there were no injuries among its supporters in the explosions. Fans had already left the stadium.

A CNN Türk reporter said the attack might have targeted riot police at the stadium. Turkey’s media watchdog, the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK), announced a gag order on further reporting the explosions.

The explosions may have been a car bomb.
