Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH: Documents from Roland Berger and NACO now available online

The former Executive of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH commissioned the business consultant Roland Berger and Netherlands Airport Consultants (NACO), in mid-2016, to undertake an independent risk assessment and feasibility study of the framework schedule and planned opening date of Berlin Brandenburg Airport. The results of the studies were presented to the Supervisory Board Project Committee on 26.09.2016 and during the meeting of the Supervisory Board on 07.10.2016.

Roland Berger estimated a 2017 opening to be unlikely in his risk assessment and feasibility study of the framework schedule and planned opening date and recommended steps to avoid default on deadlines.

During the period since September 2016, FBB has worked on implementing these steps, however other important risks affecting planning and construction deadlines also transpired, such as additional required TGA planning (technical building facilities) and alterations to the sprinkler system. Due to this additional risk of delay, it was realised in January 2017 that an opening in the 2nd half of 2017 would have to be foregone.

Due to the occurrence of the risk of additional delays, another study was commissioned in February 2017 by the CEO, which was performed by Roland Berger. The results were submitted to Dr. Karsten Mühlenfeld on 03.03.2017. The study was handed to the new CEO of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Engelbert Lütke Daldrup, on the morning of 08.03.2017. On 10.03.2017 the results of the study were presented to the Supervisory Board Project Committee.

Effective immediately, the documents provided by Roland Berger and NACO have been made publically available on the website of the airport company. With this, FBB hopes to put to rest speculation surrounding BER’s opening date, which has been circulating in various media outlets due to the patchy publication of the documents.

As Prof. Dr.-Ing. Engelbert Lütke Daldrup, CEO of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH, explained, “The publication of the documents by the airport company is an important first step towards increased transparency at BER.”
