Germany celebrates fall of the wall with an increase in UK overnights

While Germany celebrates the 28th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall today, the German National Tourist Office is celebrating another rise in overnight stays from the UK. With an increase of 5.9% for the month of August (compared to August 2016), the UK remains the 3rd most important source market in Europe for destination Deutschland.

Regionally, the biggest growth in incoming overnights overall for August 2017, compared to 2016 included Bavaria (3.3%), Bremen (4.2%), Hamburg (5%), Hesse (8,2%), with strong growth also in the eastern states of Saxony (4.8%) and Saxony—Anhalt (4.5%). The city of Leipzig for example, which is becoming increasingly popular with visitors from the UK, showed an impressive 31.8% increase in overnight stays for August, compared to 2016.

In general, German incoming tourism continues its impressive growth – an upward trend since reunification. In 2016 Germany registered more than 80 million overnight stays by international visitors for the first time – the seventh consecutive record result.

Beatrix Haun, director, GNTO UK and Ireland said: “The UK is the 3rd most important source market for Germany in Europe and 4th worldwide. Germany is the No. 1 Cultural Destination for Europeans and the British, in particular, travel to Germany for its culture, but also for its young, vibrant cities. We are delighted to be welcoming even more visitors from the UK and Ireland and predict further rises for 2017, especially as we move into the Christmas market season”.
