India ready to welcome 1.5 million visitors to crafts fair

The much-acclaimed Surajkund International Crafts Mela, now in its 31st year, got off to a colorful and vibrant start today, February 1, with as many as 21 countries taking part, apart from Indian states.

Egypt is the partner country this year, while the theme state is Jharkhand, from where some 300 artists have come for the 15-day-long fair, which attracts thousands of local and foreign tourists.

This year special efforts have been made to highlight some of the languishing arts and crafts from the Indian states.

The theme state will focus on the many festivals and fairs, said R. Sharma, Tourism Secretary of the State, at the media preview on January 31. Cuisine from the state as well as from other areas will also be promoted at the fair.

About 1.5 million visitors are expected to come to the fair and interact with the artists and buy their products. Elaborate security arrangements have been made to protect those attending.
