Jamaica to appoint tourism advisors in Europe

Jamaica Minister of Tourism, Hon. Edmund Bartlett, has signaled his intention to appoint several of Jamaica’s Honorary Consuls in Europe as unpaid Tourism Advisors to his office, as he works on significantly boosting market share for tourists to Jamaica from several key European countries.

Bartlett made the announcement following engagements with Honorary Consuls from around Europe at Jamaica’s Embassy in Berlin, Germany on Monday March 7 and will complete the move following consultations with Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Minister, Kamina Johnson-Smith.

Bartlett noted that: “Among the roles of the Tourism Advisors, most of whom reside in cities and countries where Jamaica has little or no presence, is to work closely with the Jamaica Tourist Board and the Ministry of Tourism in marketing the destination, attracting investments for the sector, assist in coordinating increased airlift arrangements from several European destinations into Jamaica and be the point of contact for all government related tourism activities in their respective countries and cities.”

Joined by Director of Tourism, Paul Pennicook; Delano Seiveright, Senior Advisor and Senior Communications Strategist; and Deputy Director of Tourism – Marketing, Marcia McLaughlin, Bartlett met with Jamaica’s Honorary Consuls from several European countries and cities, including, Jorn Follmer, Honorary Consul for Munich, Germany; Mirko Miljus, Honorary Consul for Serbia; Chetwynd R.F. Bowling, Honorary Consul for Russia; Peter-Joachim Schoenberg, Honorary Consul for Hamburg, Germany and Dr. Marian Valko, Honorary Consul for Bratislava, Slovakia.

Bartlett is currently in Berlin, Germany, participating in the largest tourism tradeshow in the world, ITB Berlin, and the International Hotel Investment Forum, which focuses on delivering opportunities to persons who currently operate within the tourism industry or who want to do business in the sector, including tourism and government officials. He also participated in a special press briefing to boost publicity worldwide for the United Nations World Tourism Organization’s (UNWTO) historic Global Conference on Building Partnerships for Sustainable Tourism for Development, being hosted by Jamaica from November 27 to 29, 2017, at the Montego Bay Convention Centre.
