Jambojet is submitting new applications to become a designated airline on foreign routes, after being rejected on its last try.
It is understood that the airline has sought to be granted permission to fly to Entebbe and at least ten other destinations in Africa, although it will have to increase its fleet size to accomplish this.
Over the past festive season, the airline ended up in hot water with regulators and passengers over a tsunami of flight cancellations and involuntary re-routings, something addressed last week by the airline’s CEO when he published an unprecedented open letter of apology.
Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, and Kilimanjaro are also on Jambojet’s drawing board, as are Blantyre and Lilongwe in Malawi – all destinations already served by Kenya Airways.
In addition, the airline has also requested licenses to fly to Addis Ababa, Mogadishu, and destinations in the DR Congo.
On the domestic scene, Jambojet has applied for rights to add more destinations such as Wajir, Garissa, and Vipingo, where at present only Safarilink flies to and from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport. The Vipingo Ridge Golf Resort has its own hard surface runway and has become a popular departure point for Nairobi from residents of the surrounding Kilifi county towns of Mtwapa and Kilifi due to the cumbersome access route to Mombasa’s Moi International Airport.
