Largest professional tennis tournament in Hawaii begins Sunday

The Hawaii Open presented by the Hawaii Tourism Authority, a Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) tennis tournament, is set for this Sunday Nov. 20 – Nov. 27 at the Patsy T. Mink Central Oahu Regional Park in Waipahu.

The inaugural Hawaii Open will be Hawaii’s largest professional tennis tournament. Featured is a 32-player singles main draw, an 8-player qualifying draw and an 8-team doubles draw.

Among the players are Sabine Lisicki, Wimbledon finalist and holder of the world-record for the fastest serve by a female tennis player, and China’s No. 1 WTA tennis player Shuai Zhang. WTA veteran Daniela Hantuchova and Carlsbad Classic finalist Nicole Gibbs will join rising WTA players such as American favorites CiCi Bellis and Ingrid Neel.

Qualifying rounds begin on Sunday, Nov. 20, at 10:00 a.m.

The Hawaii Open will host a player’s draw party at Tiki’s Grill and Bar at the Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel on Sunday, Nov. 20, at 6 p.m.

The singles and doubles main draws will be announced. Featured players are Sabine Lisicki, Shuai Zhang, Daniela Hantuchova, and Nicole Gibbs.

Players are at practice on the newly resurfaced hard courts at the Pasty T. Mink Central Oahu Regional Park. British WTA player Katie Swan, a Hawaii Open main draw wildcard, said, “I’m really excited about being given the opportunity to play in the WTA here in Hawaii. It’s a fantastic location for a tournament at the end of the year.”

The Hawaii Open has partnered with local nonprofit Hawaii Foodbank. The tournament will serve as a drop off location for donations throughout the week of Thanksgiving.
