Lombok shook again by 3rd big quake in 2 weeks

Today, on August 19, 2018 at 14:56:27 UTC, another earthquake at magnitude 6.9 struck the Lombok region in Indonesia. The area was struck by a 6.3 quake yesterday.

Earlier this month on August 5, the island was hit by a huge 7.0 quake that killed 460 people.

Today’s earthquake was at a shallow depth of 20 kilometers, which causes greater damage on land.

The distances from the epicenter of the quake are not far from some areas frequented by tourists:

• 17.6 km (10.9 mi) NNW of Labuan Lombok, Indonesia
Labuhan Lombok is a town in eastern Indonesia and is known as the port for ferries to the neighboring island of Sumbawa.

• 73.9 km (45.8 mi) NE of Lembar, Indonesia
Lembar is Lombok’s main port for ferries from Bali and is full of azure inlets and soaring green hills. Tourists find it hard to go beyond the stunning beauty of this destination.

Indonesia is the 15th largest country in the world by area and is one of Asia’s most populous countries.

There has been no reports so far of damages or injuries.
