Morena Resort: An island resort with a heart of gold

The luxurious and tranquil Morena Resort is the only eco resort on the island of Curaçao. Morena is a unique place to spend a wonderful Caribbean vacation for anyone who has the environment at heart. The property is a short walking distance to the beach and adjacent to a magnificent natural area known as the Salt Lakes.

Green Globe recently awarded Morena Eco Resort Gold Status marking five years of consecutive certification.

Paul Botman, Maintenance Manager at the resort said, “Our vision is to be the best choice for the Eco-traveler in Curaçao, by combining sustainability and luxury but to also prove that tourism and sustainability can go together perfectly. We hope to inspire others on the island so that sustainability becomes increasingly more integrated into local culture and our way of life.”

A great deal of thought has gone into planning and construction of accommodation at the resort. Buildings take advantage of natural climatic factors. For example, villas were constructed to allow sea breezes to flow through the shutter windows thereby cooling and ventilating rooms. Apartments were designed to retain as much of the original vegetation as possible and the resort was successful in saving 80% of native plants. By protecting the lush surrounding flora Morena Resort is home to abundant bird life and other indigenous creatures. In addition, the property has four eco-friendly saltwater swimming pools, one of which is a kids-only pool.

Morena Resort firmly believes that education is the most important factor in making a difference regarding raising environmental awareness. For the third year in a row, the resort will support a local initiative run by Green Kidz that encourages and teaches local school children (aged 9 to 12 years) how to care for nature and be ecologically responsible in their daily lives and also within the school environment. The project entitled ‘Adopt a School’ aims to actively contribute toward a greener, cleaner and healthier Curacao.

This year, in line with its Sustainability Plan, the resort will work in collaboration with Green Force, a local company that is dedicated to creating and facilitating recycling on the island. Through Green Force a multitude of items are produced from recycled plastic. New key chains will be created for all Morena 99 villas and apartments featuring cool modern designs provided by Limpi Recycling.
