The original space tourist has died

John Glenn, the first US astronaut to orbit Earth, died today at the age of 95.

On February 20, 1962, John Glenn flew on the NASA Friendship 7 mission which made him the first American to orbit the Earth.

He was the fifth person in space, with Cosmonauts Yuri Gagarin and Gherman Titov preceding him, along with the sub-orbital flights of US Mercury astronauts Alan Shepard and Gus Grissom.

John Glenn was the last surviving member of the Mercury Seven team.

He served as a US Senator representing the state of Ohio from December 24, 1974 to January 3, 1999.
