Paris and tourism face yet another terror attack

Police officers evacuated people from buildings tonight in the Opera Garnier Right Bank neighborhood of Paris, France, after a lone attacker stabbed 5 people with a knife in the name of Allah. One person was killed and the other 4 were injured – 2 seriously.

The Islamic State group claimed the attacker was one of its “soldiers.” The Aamaq group issued a statement saying the assailant carried out the attack in response to the group’s calls for supporters to target members of the US-led military coalition to squeeze out extremists from Iraq and Syria.

A witness said the attacker cried “Allahu akbar” (God is great in Arabic) while attacking passersby with a knife. The assailant was killed at the scene by police which occurred at approximately 9 pm on rue Monsigny.

France President Emmanuel Macron said his country would not bow to these extremists. Paris has been the location of a number of deadly terror attacks in the past few years. Prosecutor Francois Molins said counterterrorism authorities took charge of the investigation carrying potential charges of murder and attempted murder.

Bar patrons and opera-goers described surprise and confusion in the immediate area when the attack happened. Soon afterwards, however, crowds were still seen in nearby cafes, and it appeared the Paris night life quickly went back to normal.
