AirAsia Indonesia announced its intention to develop a hub in Indonesia’s West Nusa Tenggara province in an effort to bring tourists back to the island and realize the Indonesian government’s tourism agenda to develop “10 new Balis.”

Part of that will mean basing two Airbus A320 aircraft in Lombok, double existing flights to Malaysia, as well as starting a Perth service.

AirAsia group chief executive Tony Fernandes said the past year had been a very sad and challenging time for the people of Lombok, including the local tourism industry, which has suffered as a result of the recent earthquakes.

“In the next few months, we will be working with airports and government authorities to turn Lombok into our newest hub in Indonesia, making this commitment a reality,” he said.

AirAsia Indonesia CEO Dendy Kurniawan said Lombok is a premier holiday destination in the region.

AirAsia started its Kuala Lumpur service to Lombok in October 2012, and currently operates seven return flights per week.
