Scandic Berlin Kurfürstendamm: 3rd Scandic Hotel certified by Green Globe in Germany

Scandic Berlin Kurfürstendamm has been awarded Green Globe certification for its sustainability initiatives, bringing the number of Scandic hotels in Germany with this designation to three. Scandic’s other two hotels in Germany, Berlin Potsdamer Platz and Scandic Hamburg Emporio, have been Green Globe certified for excellence in sustainability since 2012.

“We chose Green Globe as our partner, securing our international standard in sustainability because the seal is internationally known and focuses on operations and processes rather than the building itself,” said Steffen Seichter, Director of E-Distribution at Scandic Hotels Germany.

“The Green Globe certificate gives us the chance to show our efforts in sustainability within a comparable, international scale. But to keep the Green Globe, a company needs to maintain its sustainability goals year-round. This will give us an extra push to improve further and work with sustainability as an integrated process across all of our operations,” added Mr Seichter.

Scandic Berlin Kurfürstendamm received the Green Globe certificate for its excellence across a range of criteria with stand-out performance in waste separation and recycling programs as well as careful selection of suppliers.

The hotel was specifically recognized for its food waste reduction program that includes the introduction of a wrapping station at the breakfast buffet. Guests can pack their breakfast at the hotel buffet, so they don’t need to throw away the rest of the breakfast when they are in a hurry or haven’t finished. The hotel has less food waste and the guests have a better start to the day.

To cut down on waste and packaging Scandic Berlin Kurfürstendamm has also introduced eco-certified products from Face Stockholm. By exchanging the bottles for these bathroom amenities, rather than throwing them away, Scandic works to reduce the amount of plastic that is sent to landfill.

In the housekeeping department, staff use iPads instead of the old fashioned printed out room lists. This has a great effect on reducing the daily amount of paper use at the hotel. And to help Germany move towards a low carbon economy, Scandic Berlin Kurfürstendamm uses only green electricity from Greenpeace Energy. The hotel also employs an innovative heat recovery system to reduce energy consumption at the hotel.

Mr. Seichter concluded by saying, “We strive to improve our measures every year and are glad to have the Green Globe certificate as an orientation for our guests at all our German hotels. We’re constantly developing new ideas to make our operations even more sustainable, and we will not rest on the success we already achieved.”

The hotel’s sustainability strategy for this year includes converting existing lighting to LED lamps to further reduce energy consumption and installing hand dryers to replace paper towels. Additionally, 15 percent of the hotel’s rooms will be converted into allergy-friendly rooms.
