Strong earthquake rocks northeastern India

An earthquake has rocked northeastern India close to its border with Bangladesh.

It had a magnitude of 5.7 on Richter Scale, India’s National Center for Seismology announced.

The earthquake struck at around 2:39pm local time with an epicenter in the Dhalai district of India’s Tripura state close to Bangladesh, officials said.

The tremor caused panic among the locals in the affected region, India’s media outlets report, citing eyewitnesses.

The tremor also caused several landslides in parts of the Dhalai and Unakoti districts, India TV reports, citing the state fire department.

Authorities are now assessing the potential damage, but there are no reports of casualties as of yet.
