Art lovers, listen closely! The Setouchi Triennale is expected to take place again in 2022. This spectacular contemporary art festival is held every 3 years across a dozen islands in the Seto Inland Sea in this stunningly beautiful, authentic region of Japan.
Largely supported by the renowned Benesse Corporation who celebrates the art scene widely across the region, the festival also serves to expand the art scene further outward in a brilliant revitalization effort in a sustainable and creative way.
Art tourism is on the rise, and visitors are always treated to wonderful, intriguing works of art no matter when they visit. The striking contrast between the contemporary style and the traditional, slow paced lifestyle of the island villages is stunning and during the Triennale, the exhibition spans 12 islands.
Art can be viewed across the islands including Naoshima, Shodoshima, Megijima and Teshima, around the ports of Takamatsu, in museums and observed through permanent installations remaining from events past. Some can be viewed indoors, others outdoors, giving way to a feeling of being in a true living museum.
