A 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck in the South Sandwich Islands region today, May 10, 2017, at 23:23:36 UTC.

The South Sandwich Islands is a British overseas territory in the southern Atlantic Ocean not far from the Antarctic Peninsula. It is a remote and inhospitable grouping of islands, where its current inhabitants consist of only a British Government Officer, Deputy Postmaster, scientists, and support staff from the British Antarctic Survey who maintain scientific bases at Bird Island and at the capital, King Edward Point, as well as museum staff at nearby Grytviken.

No tsunami warning has been issued.
