The Thai nation is in shock. Thais everywhere in the world are in disbelief. A kingdom is in mourning. King Bhumibol Adulyadej passed away today at 1552 hours local time. What is the future for Thailand? Tourism industry professionals are worried along with everyone else.

The Thai Royal Palace confirmed Thailand’s King Bhumibol, world’s longest-reigning monarch, had died at age 88.

His death will bring uncertainty. The people of Thailand will have to deal with a situation they have never dealt with before.

This evening on national TV, the official announcement was made of the passing of King Bhumibol Adulyadej (88) at 1552 hours today. The ailing Thai King had been ill for some time.

King Bhumibol Adulyadej was born on December 5, 1927. He was also known as Rama IX, the ninth monarch of the Chakri Dynasty. Having reigned since June 9, 1946, he was the world’s longest-serving head of state and was the longest-reigning monarch in Thai history, serving for over 70 years.


Since 2006, King Bhumibol had suffered declining health and had spent extended periods at Siriraj Hospital. King Bhumibol was highly revered by the people in Thailand, his heir is Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn.

Prior to the announcement, Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn returned to Thailand on Wednesday amid growing concerns about the health of his father, King Bhumibol. Earlier today, PM Prayut Chan-o-cha cancelled all appointments and official visits prompting a surge in social media comments concerning the health of the King.
