Hotel projects delayed in Nairobi

Several new hotel projects in Kenya’s capital of Nairobi are reportedly delayed, as construction and finishing bottlenecks have caused havoc to their projected soft opening timeframes initially given.

Among them is the new Hilton Garden Inn near Jomo Kenyatta International Airport as well as several hotels in Westlands, a major business hub in Nairobi.

There some 3,000 new beds that will join the market in the coming years, but existing hotels will breathe a sigh of relief that such competition will have to wait longer to enter the market as a result of several of the new kids on the block suffering from opening delays due to a variety of reasons.

Hilton has now projected a new opening date for mid-2017 while others remained quiet on what time they still need to complete buildings and, even more important, the interior outfitting of their new hotels.

Nairobi, however, remains East Africa’s regional hub for the most hotels and most beds available for major conferences and with the most new hotel projects in the pipeline of any of the EAC capitals.
