Russia has the attention of the world right now because of football. Moscow’s streets were filled with sports tourists from all over the world today. Foreign visitors are attending Worldcup Football World Championship.
The Football world cup is one of the biggest tourism events ever in Russia and is in full swing in several Russian metropolitans.
While security in Russia is on high alert a taxi driver in Moscow lost control over his car and injured more than 7 pedestrians in downtown Moscow when driving full speed on a busy sidewalk packed with tourists and shoppers. Among the people injured were two Mexican football fans celebrating in the streets of Moscow.
Officials are not treating the incident as terror-related, but media reports are including the word terror attack in their reports.
According to an eTN expert from Moscow, most likely it was about a mass celebration getting out of hand with complete disregard of traffic. The taxi driver involved left the taxi and ran away. The driver is from Kyrgyzstan and was eventually detained. He had just obtained a taxi license recently.
Failure to control the vehicle is what Moscow police is downplaying the incident to, and opened a criminal investigation. Russia made clear. This is not a terror incident.
