Strong 7.0 quake hits Papua New Guinea

A 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck Papua New Guinea at 7:00 am local time. It was strong enough to issue a tsunami warning.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said waves less than 30 centimeters high could be expected on coastlines in Papua New Guinea and the neighboring Solomon Islands.

The quake hit on a remote New Britain island, and no reports of damage have been issued. The quake’s epicenter was located around 200 kilometers southwest of Rabaul at a depth of 40 kilometers.

There have been at least 2 aftershocks with a magnitude greater than 5 since then.
