It was just at the end of December that the new stages of the Dresden State Operetta and the theatre Junge Generation theatre opened up in the creative art zone Kraftwerk Mitte Dresden. And now the next big event is already just around the corner: the freshly-renovated hotspot for culture Kulturpalast Dresden is opening on April 28. Visitors to the Royal Palace can see historic clothing in new glory starting April 9, 2017, in the permanent exhibition “The Electoral Wardrobe.”
A concert hall with outstanding acoustics, a separate stage for sharp-witted cabaret, a carefully renovated piece of architectural history, and a central location on Altmarkt – these are some of the things that make Kulturpalast Dresden a great downtown location with something for everyone. Completely restored after only three-and-a-half years, the 50-year-old Dresden landmark shines like it did on its first day.
The ultra-modern concert hall seats 1,800 and for many people it is a dream come true, especially for the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra. Thanks to its comb-like structure and the height-adjustable stage elements, it guarantees the best possible acoustics for all music genres – from classical music to easy listening, rock or jazz. And what a great start it will be: German schlager-star Roland Kaiser will be welcoming the guests to the new Kulturpalast with “Grenzenlos” (No Limits), a song that he wrote especially for this occasion. Playing together with the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra, he will be presenting his composition during the opening week from April 28 to May 6, 2017.
For Die Herkuleskeule cabaret, the move to the Kulturpalast is both a new beginning and a move closer to its old roots. This famous German cabaret started its career in 1961 in the basement of the bombed out Frauenkirche on Neumarkt in close proximity to the Kulturpalast. For more than 55 years now, the ensemble has been bringing tears of laughter to the eyes of its audience – something that is sure to continue doing in its new venue.
Only a few short steps away from the Kulturpalast there is an exhibition dedicated to this unique building that is being put on by the Dresden Local History Museum from April 22 till September 17. The exhibition focuses on the architectural significance of the Kulturpalast, in the past and today, as well as on its multiple uses as a cultural center and its history since its opening in 1969.
