The Seychelles archipelago, with some 115 islands, has long been a high profile tourism destination. With a moratorium in place halting the development of large scale resorts on the main islands of Mahe, Praslin and La Digue has the focus shifted there to smaller locally owned hotels.
Another trend in recent years was the ‘One Island – One Resort‘ concept with mostly rather small but very luxurious resorts often with only 10, 15 or 20 villas or suites.
Now has Platte Island been cleared, again, by the Island Development Company, a Seychelles’ parastatal overseeing the management of several islands, to develop a single resort on the half square kilometre isle, with no more than 50 plus villas.
The cost was suggested to be in the 70 million US Dollar range which includes paving the present grass airstrip and equip it with landing lights.
Platte is part of the Southern Coral Group of the outer islands and located some 170 kilometres south from the main island of Mahe.
IDC, which holds 20 percent of the shares in the Platte Island Development Company – which holds the land lease – is quoted in local media that the developers will have a 60 years lease on the land after which land and improvements on it, i.e buildings, will become the property of IDC and by definition the Seychelles.
While no opening date has been set is it understood that the developers are eyeing a date in 2018.
